Pirtika Majhun: Goddess Durga was created by all the Devas to conquer over the evil Mahishasura. She is the ultimate form of Shakti, portraying grace and fearfulness at the same time. The word Shakti means divine force or power. Goddess Laxmi and Saraswati along with Goddess Durga are known as the Tridevi. It is often believed that both Goddess Saraswati and Lakshmi are the daughters of Goddess Durga. But the real story is unknown to most of us.

Read on to clear some misconceptions:

According to Vishnu Purana, Lakshmi is the daughter of Bhrigu and Khyati and not Goddess Durga. She resided in Swarga with the other Goddesses. Durvasa cursed her and forced her to leave Swarga and settle in Kheersagar. She rose up during the churning of the ocean, Samudra Manthan between the Devas and Asuras. In Rigveda, Saraswati was originally a river, personified as a Goddess. According to Vedanta, she is considered to be the feminine energy with high knowledge and a consort of Brahma. She is also considered as the Shakti of Brahma. According to Skanda Purana, Saraswati is the sister of Lord Shiva. So can Saraswati be his sister and daughter at the same time? I doubt. Parvati Herself Is Saraswati And Lakshmi. According to Hindu mythology, Adi Parashakti is the original creator, observer, and destroyer of the whole universe. Parvati is considered as an incarnation of Adi Parashakti. In fact, all the other Goddesses are either her incarnations or manifestations.Vishnu Is Durga's Brother. Sati was reborn as Parvati and got married to Shiva again and became his second consort. She has many relationships with the other gods. Lord Vishnu is actually her brother and Lord Brahma is the biggest devotee. The logic of Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati being her daughters seems somewhat impossible as being the Tridevi she herself is both the goddesses in her mild form. Goddess Saraswati and Lakshmi cannot Be Durga's Daughters. It is quite evident that Saraswati and Laxmi cannot be the daughters of Durga. They are all parts of the Adi Shakti and are consorts respectively to one of the three in the Triad of Gods. It is only in Bengal that during Durga Puja, Laxmi and Saraswati are shown as daughters of Goddess Durga. It is a belief only confined to this area, during this festival. Reason behind the Bengali belief is, a particular and valid reason behind this widely prevalent belief in Bengal. The myth behind the Puja is that Uma (Durga) comes to her father's house for vacation, along with her two sons' daughters who are believed to be Lakshmi and Saraswati. In Bengal, it is a tradition for every normal Bengali married woman to come for a vacation to her parent's house, with her children. People in Bengal view Uma as an embodiment of a common girl in the state. With these facts, it is clear that Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati can'nt be Durga's daughters. What I have produced is just facts, but different beliefs are respected. They are all in one at the end.
